What is Clinical
Psychology?
Individual Assessment and Therapy

What happens in my first appointment?

Your first appointment will last up to one and a half hours.  The aim
of this session is for Michelle to gain an understanding of your
difficulties and how they affect your life, your background history and
your current life circumstances.  She will also explore your
expectations for therapy and will talk to you about the approach she
uses in her work (e.g. CBT, EMDR).

It may feel like Michelle is asking you a lot of questions in this
session.  However, it is important for her to be able to gain an
understanding of all the factors that may have caused, contributed

to
or maintained your difficulties.  With this information, Michelle will
develop a “formulation” or picture of your difficulties.  This will be
shared with you in the session to help you gain more
understanding about your difficulties and will form the basis of your
individual treatment plan.

At the end of the session, Michelle will talk to you about the type of
therapy that she recommends and an approximate number of
sessions that you may need.  This is often very difficult to estimate
at an initial session and therefore should you decide to proceed
with therapy, she will regularly review your progress.

If you or Michelle does not feel that her approach will be helpful, she
will advise you on alternative approaches, other therapies and
different sources of help that might be more appropriate for you.

If you decide to proceed with a course of treatment, Michelle will
help you to set goals for therapy.  Further individual sessions, each
lasting 50-60 minutes, will then be arranged.

What happens in therapy?

Michelle will use your individual formulation and mutually agreed
goals as the basis for your treatment.  Therapy sessions will then
aim to tackle your symptoms, reduce your distress and to enhance
a sense of well-being. This is achieved by exploring, challenging
and trying to change any unhelpful thoughts, distressing emotions,
destructive behaviours and difficulties in relating to people. Michelle
believes that therapy should be a collaborative process and you will
therefore be encouraged to take an active role in your treatment.
Michelle may suggest some practical ways for you to help yourself
outside of therapy sessions and/or provide you with exercises to try
at home.

How long will treatment last?

The length of time that people are seen by Michelle will vary from
person to person.  Some people just want to gain an understanding
or “formulation” of their difficulties and this may only take 1-2
sessions.   In terms of psychological therapy, this may range from
as few as 4-8 sessions to sometimes more than 18.   The length of
treatment depends on the nature, complexity and severity of your
individual problems and circumstances.    Michelle will frequently
review your progress and the number of sessions required.

Is what I say in therapy confidential?

Michelle adheres to all of the professional guidelines of the British
Psychological Society and therefore any information disclosed will
be treated with respect and will be confidential.   Some people do
not want their GP or any other person to know that they are receiving
help and Michelle will respect this wish,
unless any serious
professional or ethical reasons arise.  If Michelle has to breach
confidentiality, for instance if she is concerned about you being a
risk to yourself or others, she will discuss this matter with you.

What about medication?

Medication is sometimes used in conjunction with psychological
therapies however Michelle cannot prescribe, give you advice or
comment on types of medication.  She recommends that you seek
medical advice from your GP or another medical consultant
regarding medication.
